Web Workshop: Get Smart About Web Graphics
I was a bit disappointed when Tom Merritt chose not to even mention the png graphics format. For a little background, the .gif format uses a patented compression technology (owned by Unisys), so that all software using that format is subject to royalty fees. The png format was invented as public domain replacement standard for gif. The png format compresses better than gif, and has more features. The standard was first adopted in 1996, but the major browser makers were slow to adopt it. However, it is now supported in the current versions of Netscape 6 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.
